implementing ISO 9001 certificate requirements

What is ISO 9001 Certification?

ISO is the largest and most well-known organization that deals with the standardization of business and production processes. Among all certificate series, the most well-known and in-demand in countries around the world are the ISO 9000 standards, which describe the framework for developing and implementing a QMS (Quality Management System). In this series, the requirements necessary for implementing a QMS are set out in the ISO 9001 document. If a company reproduces QMS standards in its work, this provides grounds to characterize its management as competent and professional, and the presence of a certificate as an additional advantage in the competitive struggle.

The main goal of QMS is to organize the enterprise's work so that all products produced or services provided are inherently of high quality and meet the expectations and needs of buyers (customers). However, the task is not to control each unit of goods or services provided, but to eliminate the possibility of nonconformities arising. As doctors say: "It is easier to prevent a disease than to treat it," so in business, it is better to avoid a problem than to deal with the consequences afterward.

What Advantages Await a Company When Implementing QMS Standards?

The first thing to know is that QMS standards are not a solution to all problems, but merely a tool for building a successful business model, provided there is an understanding of the need for its implementation throughout the entire structural chain and effective application. In that case, the following benefits are expected:

  • Minimization of product defects;
  • Entering into long-term agreements with suppliers under mutually beneficial conditions;
  • Creating a favorable image in the eyes of customers;
  • Focusing personnel attention on company activities and achievement of set goals and objectives, which increases customer satisfaction and loyalty;
  • Achieving the desired product quality and maintaining this result;
  • Increasing the efficiency of work processes, boosting productivity, and reducing costs;
  • Eliminating duplicated functions; improving information transfer channels within the enterprise; increasing performance indicators, etc.

What Challenges Might a Company Face When Launching the Certification Process?

  • Additional costs for developing and implementing QMS;
  • Increased time resource expenditure for performing additional work;
  • Increased bureaucracy in enterprise operations;
  • Resistance of personnel to accepting changes.

For the most part, the likelihood of difficulties arising during the implementation of QMS requirements, as well as the ways to resolve them, depends on the leadership and top managers of the company. Specifically, on the seriousness of their commitment to implementing the standards; on their experience in project management and their knowledge of how best to do it; and on which organization they contacted for certification.

If the main goal is to obtain ISO 9001 (get a certificate) and create a formal QMS, then it is necessary to find a certification body where the depth and scope of requirements are minimal. However, one should not expect significant improvement in operations from implementing such a QMS.

If the expected outcome is an effective and efficient QMS, then the experience of the certification body is of great importance, since the accessibility of information and professionalism of consultants, as well as their experience backed by specialized technologies, determine the identification of existing problems and finding optimal solutions.
